Sewing rhinestones: how to do it and where to use them

Sewing rhinestones are generally used if you want to decorate a fabric, replacing or integrating embroidery with a bright and effective decoration.

These sewing rhinestones, usually made of resin, synthetic crystal or glass, have a flat surface where two small symmetrical holes appear along the contours, necessary in order to allow the passage of the needle and thread and perfect adhesion to the fabric.

How to sew rhinestones on fabric
To use sewing rhinestones, the embroidery application technique must be used.

Essential tools in this case are specific needles also used in the application of beads, particularly thin so as not to compromise in any way the fabric, joined to the thread, preferably of the same color as the fabric if the chosen rhinestones are transparent, or on the contrary in the same color as the rhinestones, in order to create continuity between the fabric itself and the subsequent rhinestone decoration.

If you want to create a design or a decoration with rhinestones, it is preferable to compose the design on a sheet before moving on to the actual application. In this way it will be possible to evaluate the actual dimensions of the decoration and the composition in relation to the surface to be embellished.

To make sure that the individual stones that make up the design remain in the original position decided by the design, it can be useful to apply them on an adhesive surface, such as a sheet of transparent and adhesive acetate that allows you to fix the small elements in the order foreseen by the decoration: in this way, even if the application of the rhinestones is interrupted several times, the original design and the set of stones chosen for the stitching will always be available.

Each rhinestone can then be applied so as to transfer the design in rhinestones to the fabric and then proceed with fixing with a needle and thread, exactly as it happens for the application of simple buttons.

This operation consists of repeatedly passing the needle through the fabric and the small holes on the rhinestone, leading the thread from one side to the other, until the acrylic element appears stable and perfectly adhered to the fabric.

However, if this technique requires a certain manual skill and a good dose of patience, the final result is particularly pleasant, especially if done with care.

This type of application, certainly more laborious and accurate than the simple hot application of hotfix rhinestones, is ideal for those surfaces that would not be able to withstand the high temperatures required for heat-adhesive Strass and, in addition, offers far more interesting creative opportunities.
